Harvest by Hillwood continues to expand our array of exceptional amenities with two new parks designed to foster imaginative play for children, giving them unique opportunities for exploration and creativity. Our two new parks — Mini Town Park and Barn Park — are more than just playgrounds. They’re community spaces where toddlers and children can dive into pretend play, building social, cognitive, and emotional skills while having fun!
Pretend play is essential for child development. It encourages children to create scenarios, problem-solve, and interact with their environment and peers in new, creative ways. Dramatic play is particularly beneficial in early childhood, providing the foundation for children to grow both intellectually and emotionally. These activities help toddlers understand the world around them, develop language skills, and learn empathy toward their peers. And with the addition of Mini Town Park and Barn Park, Harvest has created a perfect place for children to explore fun, imaginative play.
This Old West-themed park has attractions like a bank, jail, general store, and the iconic Farmhouse Coffee & Treasures — a replica of our community’s own beloved café! From the moment they step into Mini Town Park, children are immersed in a setting that encourages them to create their own adventures, role play, and make friends.
Kids can become the town’s sheriff, lock up “bandits” in the jail, or stage a daring escape through the cleverly designed escape window. They can run the general store, stocking shelves and “selling” goods to their friends. Or, they can work at the bank, safeguarding the town’s treasures and helping their peers open new accounts. The replica Farmhouse Coffee & Treasures adds a unique twist to pretend play, too, as kids can become baristas, serving up pretend lattes and pastries to their “customers.”
Mini Town Park is a perfect example of how dramatic play cultivates the creativity and storytelling inside every child. The engaging design allows children to explore different roles, practice social skills, and interact with peers in a fun, safe, and supportive environment, making it easy for kids to step into a world of their own creation and use the environment to fuel their creative play.
For a more agricultural twist on imaginative play, our Barn Park offers a farm-themed experience tailored toward younger children, but it’s a hit with kids of all ages. The park features barn animals, climbing structures, and a bike path, all designed to foster creativity. Here, children can explore tunnels, conquer slides, and jump into imaginative scenarios centered around farm life.
Barn Park’s open green spaces help toddlers flourish and older kids roam freely. Whether acting as farmers, tending to the animals, or pretending to drive the tractor, there’s plenty of action to keep everyone busy. The barn itself serves as a central feature, too, creating space for kids to act out scenarios like feeding animals or taking care of the stables. With plenty of interactive elements, Barn Park creates a setting where children are encouraged to explore their surroundings at their own pace and let their imaginations run wild.
There’s plenty of room for physical play, as well. The climbing structures, slides, and tunnels challenge their motor skills while encouraging cooperative play and storytelling along with the fun. Whether it’s a toddler navigating the bike path or a group of children tending the farm animals, the park supports both physical activity and dramatic play.
Pretend and dramatic play are critical in early childhood development. By immersing children in these types of activities, our parks help Harvest Littles build essential skills that will benefit them for years to come. Here’s how pretend play encourages growth in children of all ages:
Cognitive Development – Pretend play enhances problem-solving, creativity, and language skills. Children can imagine new scenarios, which helps them think critically and develop their own perspectives. For example, when a child takes on the role of banker at Mini Town Park or farmer at Barn Park, they must figure out how to navigate these roles, making decisions and solving problems along the way.
Social Development – Dramatic play in early childhood helps improve communication and cooperation. By engaging in pretend play, kids learn to interact with others, take on different roles, and work together to create shared experiences. At Harvest’s parks, this social development can happen naturally, as children work together to “run” a general store or “care for” farm animals.
Emotional Development – Through pretend play, children also learn to understand and regulate their emotions. By playing different characters, they explore various emotional responses and learn empathy. Whether they’re imagining themselves in a new role or collaborating with peers, the emotional growth fostered through pretend play is invaluable.
Parents can encourage this type of imaginative play at home, too, by providing simple props like pretend-play toys or dress-up clothes, as well as creating space for their kids to engage in open-ended storytelling. Asking questions like “What’s happening in your story?” or “How can we solve this problem?” fosters critical thinking and further encourages dramatic play.
At Harvest, the two new parks are just part of the extensive array of amenities that help families stay active and spend quality time together. And, with more than 300 events, activities, and classes each year, our award-winning lifestyle program encourages neighbors to connect, enjoy the beautiful green spaces, and participate in activities that strengthen the sense of community.
